I am watching this movie for work today, yes one of my jobs is too watch movies for technical problems for the criterion collection. Criterion began making laserdiscs (they invented the commentary track) then moved to DVD’s and now Blueray’s. This Night of the Hunter (2 dvd’s or 1 blueray) will be released soon and it is one of my all time favorite Hollywood movies. Criterion makes the best product in the market as they make definitive versions of classic movies. Night of the Hunter : Robert Mitchum - Love - Hate

The Long Good Friday… - UK Trailer
One of the all time best gangster movies starring Bob Hoskins. The soundtrack was sampled in the Dreadzone track in the previous post. This movie is cold blooded and was originally released on Handmade Films George Harrison’s film production company that made a handful of great films in the eighties. Check out this montage of clips to the soundtrack and a brief clip of Bob Hoskins entrance after he is released from jail. Also just noticed a 6 part youtube documentary made in 2006 on the film for what looks like the anchor bay dvd release.

FB HEROES OF 1970’S CINEMA - ROBERT ALTMAN
The above clip is from the underrated 1974 film California Split, starring George Segal and Elliot Gould as poker hustlers. Robert Altman had a great run in the 1970’s starting with the smash M.A.S.H (1970) his use of audio with multiple mic’s and unobtrusive camerawork set the groundwork for this “reality” style that pervades today.
This scene is from 1973’s The Long Goodbye Altman’s deconstruction of the Film Noir hollywood crime genre.
1977’s 3 Women is one of Altman’s most bizarre movies you can buy it on dvd at the criterion collection (whom I am now back working for).
Altman’s stellar run in the 1970’s also included many other critical hits such as Nashville, (clip below) an episodic character driven piece that has influenced everything (i.e films such as Traffic & Crash). His run of success ended in 1980 with Popeye a big budget mainstream disaster.

Zabriskie Point - Exploding Stuff END SCENE
Zabriskie Point is a 1970 film by Michelangelo Antonioni and it used to hard to find it is only recently been put on dvd. I rented this while living in midtown manhattan years ago and never returned it to the video store and my credit card got cancelled to i received many calls with the store begging me to return this great movie. This movie was a landmark as it was expected to be a big hippie themed blockbuster ala easy rider . But Michelangelo Antonioni delivered his usual introspective slow and meditative style and the movie bombed at the box office. American audience’s do not like slow movies, they never will learn… This is the end of the movie and most action packed scene 5+ minutes of a house exploding, how can you not love that…
here is a quote from a facebook conversation this morning with my friend Rich Walters:
“i fixed all the dust and scratches on l’aventura - and lost it - took off to europe and got fired from criterion (i got him the criterion job as i used to work there)
what do you want specific notes on - my memory is like ibm —- yeah but you were not inspired by Antonioni’s juant through europe of a man and his lover’s best friend — that shit ruined my life
I ended up on a train through the german snow in a sleeper car with these exchange student girls — I hadnt slept with a girl besides stella (long time gf) in four years all of a suddent i was in a bunk bed with german girls - there was no going back for me “
another slice from my life expect more quotes from myself and friends as I am trying to add actual text to this blog that will eventually make up my magnus opus self help award winning oprah’s book club - BOOK.

Got this in the mail today and it’s perfect for the rainy we are having in ATL.
Shouts to Heather Shaw for hooking these up. I worked at Criterion for a number of years in the golden age of dvd production. Janus Films is so legendary I will have to talk about it in further posts. I am most excited to watch the Eclipse series of William Klein go buy it here. I will begin a series of movie reviews from Criterion films as they are the best in the world, so check back.
