FB LEGENDS OF DANCE SERIES - GREG WILSON
Greg Wilson is a dj/producer from Liverpool England, and a true pioneer of hard electro-funk. He was a prolific dj who played such spots as FAC 51,Legend,Wigan Pier.
He was also the first dj is England to mix records on television.
The mix “No Sell Out” is a retrospective of tracks from 82/83. Here is what Greg Wilson said about the mix which was made in 2005 (download link below).
“The title of the mix, ‘No Sell Out’, comes from the opening track. It seemed an appropriate name, given the fact these records were very much regarded by the purists as the selling out of black music, rather than its salvation (something which pretty much everyone can now, with hindsight, clearly see). Listening back to these tracks you can trace the evolution of Hip Hop, Techno and House. This was the point in time when black music fully embraced the available technology and took dance to new dimensions. Hearing these records for the very first time, we knew that the future was upon us and that dance music had entered a whole new phase of its development.”
It’s interesting to know that Greg Wilson retired at the pinnacle of his career in 1984. He said it was because he achieved his ultimate goal as a dj with his night at club Legend. “I’d achieved my ultimate aim at Legend. This was to play the most cutting-edge dance music possible to the most clued-up crowd.” Thus while Acid-House/rave//ect.. blew up and made many dj’s popstar’s in England, Greg Wilson was not in the spotlight. He was one of the bridges of disco-hip-hop-house that sound transformed the clubs. There are a few interviews from the 2005 time of this mix but I could not find more information if there was more to why he left music, I think now would be time for a comeback for Mr.Wilson. Listening to the 90 minute mix one can appreciate the smoothness and its beautiful simplicity.
